Special Guest Spotlight: Andrés Antúnez

Posted on December 24, 2020January 1, 2021 by thepsychpod

Andrés Antúnez is an educator from Salinas Valley California who recently wrote, illustrated, and independently published his first children’s book ‘Someday for Lucas,’ and its Spanish version ‘Algun Día para Lucas.’

In the book, Andrés tells the story of Lucas a young boy whose mother was suddenly taken from him on his birthday. We sat down with Andres to discuss his inspiration for the book and what he hopes young readers and their families get out of the story.

On Episode 2 of The Psychpod, we discuss with Andres the lack of diverse characters in children’s literature. This lack of representation is concerning given that it is critical that all children have an opportunity to validate their identities, cultures, and experiences. When children can identify with and relate to a story or a character it teaches them that they are not alone. It shows them that there are other people out there who have experienced similar issues and provides them with an opportunity to see how others have managed these issues.

Additionally, these stories simultaneously help children learn to value and accept themselves and others and teaches them to appreciate differences and similarities across individuals.

Representation is critical to help our children learn to value themselves. Inclusive literature that is representative of each child, provides children with the opportunity to validate their existence. It could mean the world for a child to open a book and be able to identify with its main character.

Representation encompasses many factors, that go beyond a child’s psychosocial, cultural and linguistic background. It includes factors such as gender identity, sexuality, physical, mental, and cognitive abilities, as well as family dynamics. No child should feel less than simply because they may appear to be different. It is our responsibility validate every child.

Representation in children’s literature is essential and plays a critical role in the development of a child’s sense of self-worth and identity.

Andrés’ work as an educator and children’s book author serves as an inspiration to us all and reminds us that it is our responsibility to provide our children with an inclusive education and experience in this world.
